The European Championship for Small Countries is the lowest-ranked tier of the biannual EuroBasket competition, organized by FIBA Europe.
This championship first introduced in 1988, as the Promotion Cup, the competition organized for the lowest ranked European national basketball teams. Since then, the competition has been held biannually. In 2007, the Promotion Cup was officially renamed to EuroBasket Division C, with its champion getting promoted to EuroBasket Division B. That way, the 2008 Division C champions, Azerbaijan got promoted to Division B.
On 2011, and after being deleted the divisions system for the Eurobasket, the EuroBasket Division C was renamed as European Championship for Small Countries.[1]
